Overheating is one of the few faults where continuing to drive turns an ordinary repair into an engine replacement. Aluminium cylinder heads warp quickly once coolant stops doing its job, and the damage is cumulative — every time it happens, it gets worse. If your temperature gauge climbs, the right move is to stop and let it cool rather than nurse it home.

What actually causes overheating
Several very different faults present identically, which is why we diagnose rather than start replacing parts:
- Low coolant. Always means a leak somewhere, even if you cannot see one. Some leaks only appear under pressure or at temperature.
- A failed thermostat. Stuck closed causes overheating; stuck open causes the opposite — an engine that never reaches temperature, poor heat in the cabin, worse fuel economy and often a check engine light.
- Water pump failure. Usually announced by a leak at the weep hole, a bearing noise, or coolant loss with no other explanation.
- A blocked or fouled radiator. Internally scaled from old coolant, or externally blocked with debris, bugs and road grit.
- Cooling fan failure, electric or a fan clutch. The distinctive symptom is a vehicle that runs fine at highway speed and overheats in traffic, because airflow at speed masks the fault.
- A failed radiator cap. Cheap, easily overlooked, and it lowers the system's boiling point.
- Head gasket failure. Combustion gases entering the coolant. We block test to confirm this rather than infer it.
Coolant is not all the same
This matters more than most people expect. Manufacturers specify particular coolant chemistries, and they are not interchangeable — mixing incompatible types can gel the coolant into a sludge that blocks the radiator and heater core, which turns a top-up into a system flush and sometimes a parts replacement.
Coolant also has a service life. Its corrosion inhibitors deplete, and depleted coolant quietly attacks the aluminium and gaskets it is supposed to protect. We test its condition and protection level rather than judging by colour, because colour tells you almost nothing.
Winter matters here
In a climate that reaches well below freezing, coolant protection level is a genuine safety item, not a formality. Coolant that has been topped up with plain water over time may no longer protect to the temperature Spokane actually reaches, and a freeze can crack a block or a heater core. Testing it takes a moment and we do it as part of any cooling system visit.
Radiators and heater cores
We replace radiators, water pumps, thermostats and housings, hoses, fan clutches and cooling fans, expansion tanks and radiator caps. Plastic thermostat housings and expansion tanks become brittle with age and heat cycling and are a common failure on a lot of vehicles, European ones especially.
A heater core is the same system inside your dash. Its symptoms are weak heat, a sweet smell in the cabin, fogging windows that will not clear, or damp carpet on the passenger side.
Diesel and heavy-duty cooling
Diesels work their cooling systems harder, and trucks that tow harder still. We service cooling on diesel pickups and heavy equipment including charge air coolers, and if you pull a trailer over the passes, cooling capacity is worth checking before summer rather than during it.
