Transmission Repair

Automatic and manual transmission service — fluid changes, diagnostics, clutch replacement, and full rebuilds.

A transmission rarely fails without warning. It usually spends months telling you something is wrong, and the difference between a fluid service and a rebuild is very often how early somebody listened. That is worth knowing, because transmission work is among the most expensive repairs on a vehicle and among the most preventable.

All Motors Center diagnoses and repairs automatic and manual transmissions on cars, light trucks and heavy-duty diesels at our East Trent Avenue shop.

Symptoms you should not wait on

  • Slipping — the engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate in proportion, or the RPM flares between gears. This is the one to act on immediately.
  • Harsh, delayed or clunky shifts, or a long pause between selecting Drive and the vehicle actually engaging.
  • Shuddering at a steady cruise, often around 40 to 50 mph. Frequently a torque converter clutch issue, and often fixable without opening the transmission if caught early.
  • A burnt smell, or fluid that is dark brown rather than red. Burnt fluid means heat, and heat is what kills transmissions.
  • Red or brown fluid on the driveway.
  • A check engine light with transmission codes. Some of these are sensors or solenoids, which is a far smaller job than the noise suggests.
  • Grinding or difficulty selecting gears in a manual, or a clutch pedal that engages right at the top of its travel.

Diagnosis before disassembly

We scan for transmission control module codes and watch live data — line pressure, solenoid commands, input and output shaft speeds, and fluid temperature — before anyone talks about a rebuild. A surprising share of transmission complaints turn out to be a failed speed sensor, a shift solenoid, a wiring or connector fault, or low fluid from a leak. Those are ordinary repairs.

We also check the basics that get skipped: fluid level and condition, cooler line flow, and engine mounts, because a collapsed mount can produce a clunk that feels exactly like a transmission problem.

Fluid service

Transmission fluid does more than lubricate. It carries hydraulic pressure that applies the clutches, and it carries heat away. As it ages it oxidises, loses friction properties, and stops transferring heat effectively — which accelerates its own decline.

The right interval depends on the vehicle and how it is used. Towing, hauling, and stop-start city driving all shorten it considerably. Some manufacturers describe the fluid as lifetime fill; in our experience that claim does not survive contact with a truck that tows in a climate with real winters. We check the fluid's condition and tell you what we see rather than working from a calendar.

One caution worth stating plainly: on a high-mileage transmission that has never had a fluid service and is already slipping, a fluid change will not fix it and occasionally makes the symptom more obvious. We will tell you that before we take your money, not after.

Heavy-duty and towing

Trucks that tow live a harder life. Heat is the enemy, and an auxiliary transmission cooler is one of the most cost-effective protective measures you can add to a truck that pulls a trailer over the passes. We service heavy-duty automatics and manual gearboxes in diesel pickups and commercial equipment, including clutch replacement.

Call (509) 655-7715 and describe what you are feeling — the symptom genuinely narrows down the diagnosis.

What You Get

  • Automatic and manual transmission diagnosis
  • Fluid and filter service
  • Solenoid, sensor and valve body repair
  • Torque converter shudder diagnosis
  • Clutch replacement
  • Heavy-duty and towing transmission service
  • Auxiliary cooler installation
  • Written estimate before any work begins

How It Works

  1. 1Road test to reproduce the shift or slip complaint
  2. 2Scan transmission control module codes and record live data
  3. 3Check fluid level, colour, smell and cooler flow
  4. 4Rule out sensors, solenoids, wiring and mounts before internal work
  5. 5Explain the diagnosis and give a written estimate
  6. 6Carry out the approved repair or service
  7. 7Road test again through the full shift range to confirm

Frequently Asked

What are the first signs of transmission trouble?

Slipping, where the engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate in proportion, is the most urgent. Harsh or delayed shifts, a shudder at steady cruise, a burnt smell, or dark brown fluid instead of red are all worth booking for. Acting early is often the difference between a service and a rebuild.

Does a transmission problem always mean a rebuild?

No, and it is worth checking before assuming. A meaningful share of transmission complaints turn out to be a failed speed sensor, a shift solenoid, a connector fault or low fluid from a leak. We scan codes and read live data before anyone discusses opening the unit.

How often should transmission fluid be changed?

It depends on the vehicle and how you use it — towing, hauling and stop-start driving all shorten the interval. Some manufacturers call the fluid a lifetime fill, which we would not rely on for a truck that tows in this climate. We assess the actual condition of your fluid and tell you what we see.

My transmission is slipping. Will a fluid change fix it?

Usually not. On a high-mileage transmission that is already slipping, fresh fluid will not restore worn clutches and can occasionally make the symptom more obvious. We will tell you that before doing the work rather than after.

What causes a shudder around 40 to 50 mph?

Most commonly the torque converter clutch. Caught early it can often be addressed without opening the transmission, which is a large difference in cost — another reason not to wait on it.

Do you work on heavy-duty and diesel truck transmissions?

Yes, including heavy-duty automatics and manual gearboxes in diesel pickups and commercial equipment, and clutch replacement. If you tow regularly, ask us about an auxiliary cooler — heat is what kills these units.
