Duramax Repair
Duramax diesel service in Spokane — injectors, injection pumps, cooling, emissions and Allison transmission work.
The 6.6L Duramax has gone through a lot of revisions, and they are genuinely different engines to work on. Telling us the model year first is not a formality — it determines what is likely wrong and what a sensible repair costs.
We service Duramax engines in Chevrolet and GMC trucks, along with the Allison transmissions behind most of them.
The early engines and injectors
The first-generation Duramax is known for injector failure, and the location makes it worse: the injectors sit under the valve covers, so replacing them is a bigger job than on engines where they are accessible from above. The symptoms are hard starting, a rough idle, white smoke, knocking, and fuel making its way into the crankcase and raising the oil level. That last one is worth taking seriously, because fuel-diluted oil stops protecting bearings.
Because the labour is significant, we test rather than guess — return flow and balance rates identify which injectors are actually failing before anyone commits to the job.
Cooling and towing
The generation that followed had a well-earned reputation for running hot while towing, particularly on long grades in summer. If you pull a trailer over the passes, cooling system condition is not a background concern. We check radiator and cooler condition and flow, fan clutch operation, and coolant condition, because an engine that overheats under load is doing cumulative damage every time it happens.
The high-pressure pump
The biggest single risk on the later trucks is the high-pressure injection pump. When it fails it does not fail gently: it sheds metal debris through the entire fuel system, which means pump, injectors, rails and lines all need attention. It is one of the most expensive failures a modern diesel can suffer.
What reduces the risk is unglamorous and effective — clean fuel, filters changed on schedule rather than when convenient, and the water separator drained regularly. Water is the enemy of these pumps, and a two-minute job prevents a five-figure one.
The most recent generation moved to a more robust pump and has generally been the strongest of the family.
Emissions
EGR valve and cooler failures, DPF loading on trucks that do mostly short trips, and DEF system faults including quality sensors and injectors are all routine work for us. Frequent regeneration usually means soot is accumulating faster than it is burned off, which can be a duty-cycle problem rather than a broken part — and that distinction is worth establishing before spending money.
We do not delete emissions equipment. Beyond being a federal violation and a DOT inspection failure, it substantially reduces what the truck is worth.
Allison transmissions
Most Duramax trucks pair with an Allison, which is a strong unit that still responds to heat. If you tow, fluid condition and an auxiliary cooler are the two things that most extend its life. We service them, and we diagnose shift complaints with live data before anyone discusses opening one up.

How It Works
- 1Confirm the model year — the generations are genuinely different engines
- 2Scan engine, aftertreatment and transmission codes with live data
- 3Test injector return flow and balance rates before quoting labour
- 4Check rail and supply pressure and inspect fuel for water or debris
- 5Assess cooling capacity if the complaint involves towing
- 6Explain findings and give a written estimate
- 7Repair, then load test and re-scan
Frequently Asked
How do I know if my Duramax injectors are failing?
Hard starting, rough idle, white smoke, knocking, and fuel raising the oil level in the crankcase. On the early engines the injectors sit under the valve covers, so the labour is significant — we test return flow and balance rates to identify which are actually at fault before committing to the job.
Why does my Duramax overheat when towing?
One generation in particular is known for it, especially on long summer grades. We check radiator and cooler condition and flow, fan clutch operation and coolant condition. It is worth fixing rather than managing, because an engine that overheats under load accumulates damage each time.
What is the CP4 pump problem?
When that high-pressure injection pump fails it sheds metal debris through the whole fuel system, so pump, injectors, rails and lines are all affected. It is among the most expensive diesel failures there is. Clean fuel, on-schedule filters and a regularly drained water separator are what reduce the risk.
Fuel is getting into my oil. Is that serious?
Yes. Fuel-diluted oil stops protecting bearings, so it is a reason to stop driving and get it looked at rather than topping up and carrying on. It usually points at injectors.
Do you service the Allison transmission too?
Yes. It is a strong unit but it responds to heat, so if you tow, fluid condition and an auxiliary cooler are what most extend its life. We diagnose shift complaints with live data before anyone discusses opening one.
Can you delete the emissions system?
No. It is a federal violation, it fails a DOT inspection, and it substantially reduces the truck's value. We repair those systems properly instead.
