Why Winter Preparation Matters in Spokane
Spokane averages 45 inches of snow annually with temperatures regularly dropping below 0°F. These conditions put extreme stress on your vehicle's battery, cooling system, tires, and brakes. A breakdown in freezing temperatures isn't just inconvenient — it's dangerous.
Battery and Electrical System
Cold weather is the number one killer of car batteries. At 32°F, a battery loses 35% of its cranking power. At 0°F, it loses over 60%. Before winter:
- Have your battery tested — most auto parts stores do this free, or bring it to us
- Check battery terminals for corrosion (white or green buildup)
- Ensure your alternator is charging properly
- Replace batteries older than 4 years proactively
Cooling System and Antifreeze
Your cooling system must protect against freezing down to at least -30°F for Spokane winters:
- Test antifreeze concentration — should be 50/50 mix of coolant and water
- Inspect hoses for cracks, bulges, or soft spots
- Check for leaks around the water pump, radiator, and heater core
- Flush the cooling system every 2-3 years or per manufacturer recommendation
Tires and Traction
- Install winter tires or verify all-season tires have adequate tread (4/32" minimum for winter)
- Check tire pressure monthly — tires lose 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature
- Consider tire chains for South Hill and other steep areas
- Verify your spare tire is properly inflated
Brakes
Winter driving means more braking on slippery surfaces. Have your brakes inspected before winter to ensure pads, rotors, and brake fluid are in good condition. Stopping distance on ice can be 10x longer than dry pavement.
Emergency Winter Kit
Keep these items in your vehicle from November through March:
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Jumper cables or portable jump starter
- Blanket, warm gloves, and a flashlight
- Small shovel and a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction
- Phone charger and emergency contact numbers
