How Spokane Summers Affect Your Vehicle
Spokane's summers bring temperatures above 100°F, intense UV exposure, and dusty conditions from construction and wildfire smoke. Heat is the second biggest enemy of car components after cold — it accelerates wear on rubber parts, batteries, fluids, and electronics.
Cooling System Check
Your cooling system works hardest in summer. An overheating engine can cause catastrophic damage in minutes:
- Check coolant level and condition — flush if it's been more than 2 years
- Inspect the radiator for debris, bugs, and bent fins that block airflow
- Test the thermostat and water pump for proper operation
- Check radiator and heater hoses for soft spots or cracks
Air Conditioning Service
If your AC isn't blowing cold, don't suffer through a Spokane summer. Common AC issues include:
- Low refrigerant from slow leaks
- Worn compressor clutch
- Clogged cabin air filter (easy and inexpensive to replace)
- Electrical issues with the blower motor or controls
Have your AC system inspected and recharged if needed before peak summer heat.
Tire Care in Heat
Hot pavement accelerates tire wear and increases blowout risk:
- Check tire pressure when tires are cold (morning) — heat causes pressure to rise
- Inspect for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear patterns
- Rotate tires every 5,000-7,500 miles for even wear
- Replace tires with less than 3/32" tread depth
Battery Health
Heat damages batteries more than cold — it accelerates internal corrosion and fluid evaporation. Batteries that survived winter may fail in summer heat. Have your battery tested if it's more than 3 years old.
Fluids and Belts
- Check all fluids: oil, transmission, brake, power steering, and windshield washer
- Inspect serpentine belt for cracks and glazing
- Check wiper blades — summer sun degrades rubber quickly
